When it comes to getting past white water every surfer needs to know how to duck dive, it is one of the most important things to know how to do properly. Duck diving is when the wave is either going to break or its white water and the surfer is paddling towards the wave and going under the wave and being hopefully brought back up, whenever you start to try the duck dive you might get washed back.

Unfortunately the duck dive doesn’t take a couple of goes in the water to master. In order to get the idea in your head on how to fast to paddle, timing and how deep you have to duck to get under the wave. So when starting to practice the duck dive please try the duck dive in small waves. It depends sometimes how big the wave is and how heavy you are, the aim is to duck dive under the wave and make it to the surface and paddle off to hit down the next set.

You are now paddling out back and a wave is about to break on your head and you are gonna eat sand if you don’t duck dive. Just make sure you are paddling straight at the wave not at an angle. Now read the four easy steps to duck diving those big waves at your local beach!

Step one. Put your hands on the side of the board (rails), just down the way from the nose and push downwards so that you sink the nose of the board underwater.

Step two. Make sure when you are going under that you put shoulder force into it so you can get a good deep duck dive. Make sure to take a deep breath.

Step three. When the wave has broke and your nose is under you should either use your knee or foot to submerge the other end of the board, just make sure that when duck diving that the nose is slightly deeper than the tail.

Step four. You should hear, if you can hear, the wave making its way over you. If you have done the last few steps correctly then you should be making your way up to the surface right now, if not I hope you enjoy eating sand.
