If you don’t do the right things when your underwater you can either have a serious injury or even death can occur. Before we start this online surfing lesson we want you to know these simple tips for the next time your out surfing.

  1.  Don’t panic when you are underwater, you can run out of energy very easy trying to fight a 10ft wave or even small as 4ft waves. Whenever you hit the water you want to relax, once the wave has passed over you this is when you should swim to the surface. Its vital you know how to swim if you are planning to make surfing your chosen sport.
  2. You should know that surfing isn’t all just splashing about in the water, you must understand that pain and suffering is a part of this sport.
  3. If you are a beginner to surfing then please do not be venturing out to big waves, keep yourself to the smaller waves. You aren’t Kelly Slater, yet!

Now that you all know these simple tips you can now read the following instructions to what you actually need to do whenever you know that your about to fall off your surfboard.

  1. Take a deep breath incase you are kept underwater for a while.
  2. As you make your way under you want to curl yourself into a ball, keep your chin close to your chest and hold your head with your arms incase your board decides to smack you.
  3. Close your eyes and wait until the wave settles down and then you can open your eyes which will help you find your way to the surface.
  4. Whenever the wave has settled down, now you can swim to the surface.
  5. For this stage you should hopefully have been smart enough to go surfing with a leash, pull on your leash and grab your board.
  6. If there is a lot of water or surfers riding the oncoming set, duck dive the white water or if you have been beat up badly then get out of there before that set gives you another pounding!

Just because you now know what to do whenever a surfing wipeout occurs, this doesn’t mean you can go out and battle with the 20ft waves. The most important thing is that you surf waves that our within your ability. Its smart to only go out into surf that you are comfortable about going out of your depth in.
