O’Neill Surfing History and Logo’s

O'Neill Logo

O’Neill is a popular equipment and surfwear brand that was founded in San Francisco California, but then later moved down to Santa Cruz. Some give O’Neill credit saying that they invented the modern wetsuit design. They now make clothing and their clothing department is based in Irvine, California with the surf division still in Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz.

In 1996  O’Neill set up O’Neill Sea Odyssey, ocean-based, free program to educate young people about the sea’s environment.

Jack O’Neill in 1950 opened his first surf shop in his garage, a san dune away from his personal favourite bodysurfing break. Dale Velzy, Hobie Alter and many more had shops down south, but they only sold surfboards. He sold his first wetsuits, vests made from glueing together pieces of closed cell foam.

O’Neill has made countless improvements over the years to the design and quality of their wetsuits. From their introduction of the zigzag stitch to Jack originated which became generic.

Pat, Jack’s son was a pioneer in making the leash, except then it was called the “kook cord”. Using materials such as suction cups, surgical tubing and nylon lines, Pat made it possible to prevent his board from crashing into cliffs and breaking in half.

The O’Neill brand has many products such as wetsuits, surfboards, swimsuits, boardbags, clothing and shoes are some of the products that O’Neill print their logo on.
